Our Story
Our mission is to support the emotional and physical needs of families by providing, free of charge, handmade items for needy and premature infants, as well as necessary clothing and memorial items for families affected by infant loss.
Premature birth and infant mortality remain a significant problem in many states, including Ohio. As of 2021, Ohio’s preterm birth rate is 10.3% (which has not changed significantly since 2010), and the rate for the city of Columbus is 11.6% (March of Dimes Report Card, 2021, available at www.marchofdimes.org). This is important because low birth weight and prematurity are two of the major risk factors for infant mortality (death within the first year of life). The infant mortality rate for Ohio is presently .7%. In addition, 10-15% of all known pregnancies end in infant loss (www.marchofdimes.org). Experiencing infant loss can be emotionally devastating to the expectant mother as well as to other family members.
Gifts for Angels, Inc. is currently serving facilities 15 facilities in Franklin County and 3 departments at Adena Hospital in Ross County for receipt of our items. At this time, we make and provide quilts, receiving blankets, bibs, and burp cloths, as well as selected other handmade items for families who have a premature infant or are in financial need.
We also provide multiple memorial items and clothing for burial to help families who have suffered infant loss. The items are distributed to families through 18 hospitals around Ohio or through direct requests.
