Quilt Guidelines
Materials: For the quilt top, use cotton or cotton blends. For the quilt back, use cotton, cotton blend, or muslin.
Machine: use sewing machine.
Color: You can use fabric of any color or print. When using a darker color, we suggest you match it up with some lighter colors, so that the quilt will be “baby friendly”
Size: to fit isolates, quilts approx. 36” x 45” are best; however, 36” x 36” work as well. Quilts that are slightly smaller or larger are fine. Please keep the width of the quilt top to 40” or less so that one width of backing can be used.
Pattern: Quilts can be made in squares, strips, a single piece of fabric, or pieced together. Quilts can have a binding or be topstitched around the edges.
Labels: A “Gifts for Angels” label should be sewn onto the quilt top in the lower right hand corner. The bottom of the label should be parallel to the bottom of the quilt top and 2” to 3” away from the bottom of the top, and the right side of the label should be parallel to the right side of the quilt top and 2” to 3” away from the side of the quilt top.
Finish: Quilts can be machine quilted or hand tied. When hand tying, use crochet thread spacing the ties 4” to 6” apart using a double knot. Trim ties to about 1/2” long.
Washing:
Finished quilts must be washed.
Please use a “color catcher” in the washer if the fabric has colors that are likely to run.
Do not use fabric softener in the washer or dryer.
After washing/drying please check the quilt for loose threads, open seams, pins, etc.
Notes:
Finished quilts are appreciated; however, we will accept quilt tops which can be finished by volunteers.
Please iron the top before turning it in or make a note if not ironed.
Use safety pins rather than straight pins when sewing the quilts together. Safety pins are more secure and visible.
